Deadwood – Al Swearengen

My favourite character from the HBO series Deadwood. His face is so much fun to draw. It is so full of lines and character. I don’t think I’ve ever come across a more interesting looking person. Although after familiarising myself with him over 3 seasons, I find the actor (Ian McShane) looks rather strange without his trademark moustache.

I paused the DVD at various scenes and did some rough sketches in colour pencil. I tried to go for strange angles and lighting – just to make things a little challenging.

exomod sketches

sketches of random passers by, ppl waiting at the bus stop and ppl having coffee at Exomod Cafe in Mount Lawley.

From memory, the large chap with the akubra was waiting for about 20 minutes at the bus-stop one sunday morning. The rest are a mish-mash of people I saw during the week.

A rather important area I need to improve on is clothing. In particular, attention to the physics of folds and shadows.
